The vocabulary that shows up on every quote, spec sheet, and dock — defined without the jargon.
| Term | What it means |

| GMA pallet | The 48×40 inch Grocery Manufacturers Association standard — the most common pallet in North America. |
| Stringer | One of the parallel boards running the length of a pallet that supports the deck. Notching them adds 4-way forklift entry. |
| Block pallet | A pallet built on nine solid blocks instead of stringers, giving true 4-way entry for forklifts and pallet jacks. |
| Deck board | The boards forming the top and bottom surfaces of a pallet that carry and distribute the load. |
| 4-way entry | A pallet a forklift or jack can enter from all four sides — via notched stringers or block construction. |
| 2-way entry | A pallet forks can enter from only two opposite sides (solid, un-notched stringers). |
| ISPM-15 | The international standard requiring wood packaging in export freight to be heat-treated or fumigated and stamped. |
| HT stamp | The mark certifying a pallet was heat-treated to ISPM-15 — no chemicals, no bark, export-legal. |
| Core | A used pallet that has finished one job and arrived for sorting — the raw material of the recycled stream. |
| Reman | A remanufactured pallet rebuilt from sorted good boards salvaged from cores too damaged to repair whole. |
| Dynamic load | The weight a pallet can safely carry while being moved by a forklift or jack. |
| Static load | The much larger weight a pallet can hold while sitting still on the floor. |
| EPAL / EUR | The stamped 1200×800 mm European block pallet used in pooling and much European freight. |
| Pool program | A shared pallet rental system where pallets circulate among many shippers instead of being bought outright. |

Where should I start?

Do I need heat-treated pallets?
Only for international shipments. Domestic freight within the U.S. doesn't require ISPM-15. If your load crosses a border, the wood packaging almost certainly needs the HT stamp — our heat-treatment guide walks through exactly when and why.
Are these guides specific to Cincinnati?
