Mold Is a Symptom, Not the Disease
When you see mold spreading across a pallet, the mold itself is not really the problem. It is a signal that the wood has been holding too much moisture for too long. Fix the moisture and you fix the mold at the source. Wipe away the mold and leave the water, and it comes right back, often worse.
Wood pallets are especially prone because they are porous, they spend time outdoors, and they are often stored in ways that trap dampness. The stakes vary. For a lot of general freight, a little surface mold is cosmetic. For food, pharmaceutical, or export loads, mold can mean a rejected shipment or a failed audit. Knowing which situation you are in tells you how hard to fight it.
Where the Moisture Comes From
Pallets pick up moisture from a handful of predictable sources. Rain and snow on outdoor stacks are the obvious ones, but so is ground contact, where wood wicks water up from a wet slab or dirt for as long as it sits there. Even indoors, humid air and condensation can raise the moisture content of wood over time.
The sneakiest source is trapped humidity. A pallet that gets wet and then cannot dry, because it is buried in a tight stack or wrapped in a non-breathing cover, stays damp far longer than one left to air out. That prolonged dampness, not a single soaking, is what actually grows mold. Airflow is the antidote.
When Mold Actually Disqualifies a Pallet
Not all mold is equal, and treating every spot of mold as a death sentence wastes good pallets. Light surface mold on a structurally sound pallet headed for general warehouse or industrial freight is often acceptable and can frequently be cleaned or dried away. The wood underneath is usually fine.
The line hardens for sensitive cargo. Food-grade, pharmaceutical, and many export shipments have strict requirements, and visible mold typically means the pallet is out. Mold that has progressed to soft, spongy, discolored wood is a different problem entirely, since that is rot, and rot compromises strength no matter what the load is.

Preventing Mold Before It Starts
Prevention is almost entirely about keeping wood dry and letting it breathe. Store pallets off the ground on racks or blocks so they never wick moisture from below, and keep stacks in a way that lets air circulate rather than sealing dampness in. These two habits alone prevent the majority of mold problems.
If you cover outdoor stacks, tent the cover so air still moves, or cover only the top. Bring wet pallets somewhere they can dry before stacking them tightly. And rotate your inventory so no pallet sits damp and forgotten for months. Dry wood does not mold, so every prevention step is really just a way of keeping wood dry.
Treating Mold You Already Have
For pallets that already show mold and are headed for non-sensitive use, the cure follows the cause: dry them out and clean the surface. Moving stacks into airflow and sunlight will halt active mold, and light surface growth can be brushed or washed off once the wood is dry. Kiln drying, where available, drives moisture out fast and reliably.
Do not just paint or wrap over mold to hide it, because sealing damp wood makes the problem worse underneath. And know when to quit: if the wood is soft, punky, or the mold has clearly become rot, treating it is a waste of time. That pallet belongs in the scrap and recycle stream, not back in rotation.
Heat Treatment, Kiln Drying, and Export
Export pallets that meet the ISPM 15 standard are heat treated, which brings the wood's core to a set temperature to kill pests. Heat treatment is about pests, not mold specifically, but the drying that comes with proper processing helps keep moisture low. It is worth understanding the distinction so you order the right pallet for an export job.

Off-the-ground storage, ventilated stacks, first-in-first-out rotation, and a quarantine spot for wet or moldy units together keep the problem from ever gaining a foothold. When mold does show up, treat it as feedback about your storage rather than an isolated nuisance. A recurring mold problem almost always points back to a stack sitting in water or a cover that cannot breathe.
