The Six ISO Pallet Sizes and When You'll Meet Them

One World, Six Pallets
Anyone who has only shipped domestically assumes the 48x40 pallet is universal. Step into international trade and that assumption falls apart fast. The International Organization for Standardization, known as ISO, recognizes not one but six pallet footprints, because different regions of the world standardized around different sizes long before global trade forced them to talk to each other.
These six sizes are not interchangeable, and the differences are real enough to matter for how your product fits containers, racking, and handling equipment overseas. A pallet that fills a North American trailer perfectly may waste space in a European warehouse, and vice versa. If you sell into multiple regions, you will eventually deal with more than one of these footprints.

The North American Contenders
Two of the ISO sizes are the ones a Cincinnati shipper already knows. The 48x40 inch pallet, which in millimeters is about 1219 by 1016, is the North American GMA standard and the one that dominates domestic freight here. It is recognized internationally, but outside North America it is far less common than at home.
The other familiar face is the 42x42 inch pallet, roughly 1067 by 1067 millimeters, a square footprint that shows up in specific industries such as telecommunications and some chemical and paint sectors. Its square shape can be handled from any side in the same way and suits certain drum and cylindrical loads, but it is a niche size compared with the 48x40.
Because these are the sizes built into North American infrastructure, they are what you default to unless a customer or destination specifies otherwise. The trouble starts when that customer is on another continent with a completely different standard baked into their warehouses.
The European and Asian Standards
The rest of the ISO sizes are where domestic shippers get caught out. The most important is the European pallet, often called the EUR or EPAL pallet, measuring 1200 by 800 millimeters, which is roughly 47.2 by 31.5 inches. It is a block pallet, built to a tightly controlled specification, and it dominates European supply chains the way the 48x40 dominates ours. If you ship to Europe, you will almost certainly encounter it.
Two more sizes round out the European and international picture: the 1200 by 1000 millimeter pallet, common in Europe and parts of Asia for heavier or bulkier loads, and the 1140 by 1140 millimeter square pallet used in maritime and certain industrial contexts. Each fits its regional containers and racking better than an imported footprint would.
The sixth ISO size is the 1100 by 1100 millimeter pallet, the workhorse across much of Asia, including major manufacturing and export economies. If your supply chain reaches into Asian markets, this square footprint is the one you are most likely to meet on the far end. Here is the full set for quick reference.

Why the Sizes Diverged
The six sizes exist for the same reason languages exist: regions developed their infrastructure independently and optimized for local conditions before global trade demanded compatibility. European warehouses, trucks, and doorways were built around metric footprints that fit their trailers and their historically tighter urban logistics. North America built around imperial dimensions and roomier trailers.
Asian standards reflect their own container and handling ecosystems, often favoring square footprints that handle predictably in dense, highly automated distribution. None of these choices was wrong; each was optimal for its own environment. The friction only appears when goods cross between systems and a pallet sized for one region lands in another.
Container fit is a big part of why the sizes stuck. The 1200 by 800 EUR pallet, for example, is dimensioned to load efficiently into European transport, while the 48x40 is tuned to North American trailers. Change the pallet and you change how many fit in a container, which changes your shipping cost per unit. That economic lock-in keeps each region loyal to its own standard.
What to Do When Sizes Collide
When you ship between regions, you have a few options, and the right one depends on the relationship and the volume. Sometimes the customer specifies the pallet they want and you simply build or source to their footprint, which is the cleanest solution when they have strict warehouse requirements. Complying with their standard avoids re-palletizing on the far end.
Other times you ship on your own footprint and the goods get transferred to local pallets at a distribution point, which adds handling cost and labor. And for some routes, especially by ocean container, shippers palletize to whatever maximizes container fill and let the receiver sort it out. There is no single right answer, only tradeoffs to weigh with your freight forwarder and customer.
The mistake to avoid is not thinking about it at all and discovering at the destination that your pallets do not fit the customer's racking or, worse, do not clear customs because they are also not ISPM-15 compliant. Size and phytosanitary treatment are separate requirements, and export pallets have to satisfy both.
The Practical Bottom Line
For day-to-day domestic work in Cincinnati, the 48x40 remains your default and covers the overwhelming majority of what you ship. You do not need to stock European or Asian pallets speculatively. What you need is awareness, so that when an international order comes in you ask the right question early: what footprint does the destination expect?
If the answer is a foreign ISO size, source it deliberately and confirm both the dimensions and the treatment requirements before you commit to a shipping method. Getting this right up front is far cheaper than paying for re-palletizing, rejected racking, or a customs hold on the other side of an ocean.
