The Short Answer for a 53-Foot Van

The question we hear most is how many pallets fit in a standard 53-foot dry van, and the clean answer is 26 pallets floor-loaded in a single layer, or 52 if you can double stack. That count assumes the common 48 by 40 GMA footprint loaded 'straight,' meaning two pallets across the width down the length of the trailer.

A 53-foot van has roughly 630 inches of usable length and about 98 to 100 inches of interior width. Load 48 by 40 pallets with the 40-inch side across, two side by side, and you fit 13 rows of two, which is 26. That's the number that runs the freight world, and it's worth committing to memory.

Everything else, other trailer lengths, other pallet sizes, turned loading, is a variation on that same simple math. Once you understand where 26 comes from, you can figure out any configuration on the back of a napkin.

Counts by Trailer Size

Trailer length drives the count directly. A 53-foot van gives you 26 straight-loaded 48 by 40 pallets single stacked. A 48-foot van, once the standard before 53s took over, holds 24. A 28-foot pup trailer, common in less-than-truckload and doubles, takes 12 to 14 depending on how tight you load.

Box trucks and straight trucks are smaller and vary more. A 26-foot box truck typically fits 12 pallets single stacked, a 24-foot around 10, and a 16-foot around 6. Cube vans and smaller delivery trucks fall below that. If you're planning local deliveries around Cincinnati, know your truck's interior length and divide it out.

All of these assume the pallets fit two across, which the 48 by 40 does. Change the pallet size and the width math changes, sometimes dramatically, which is the next thing to understand.

Straight vs. Turned Loading

How you orient the pallet changes how many fit, and this trips people up constantly. Loaded straight, a 48 by 40 pallet sits with its 40-inch edge across the trailer, two across, and you get 26 in a 53-footer. Turn the pallets so the 48-inch edge runs across, and two side by side need 96 inches, which still fits the width but eats length differently.

The right orientation depends on the pallet size and the trailer width. For 48 by 40s, straight loading (40-inch faces across) is the efficient default and gives you the 26 count. Some sizes actually fit more when turned, so it's worth checking both ways rather than assuming.

Pinwheeling, alternating orientations to lock a load together, is a stability technique, not a capacity one. It can cost you positions, so use it when a load needs the extra security, not when you're chasing maximum count.

When Weight, Not Space, Sets the Limit

Here's the reality that surprises new shippers: most trucks run out of weight before they run out of floor. A standard tractor-trailer is capped around 45,000 pounds of payload once you account for the tractor, trailer, and legal gross limit. Divide that across 26 pallets and you get well under 2,000 pounds per pallet before you're overweight.

So if your product is dense, bricks, liquids, canned goods, metal, you'll hit the weight ceiling with the floor still open. Loading all 26 positions with heavy freight can put you illegally overweight, and that's a fine, a safety problem, and a potential shutdown at the scale. Always run the weight math, not just the space math.

The flip side is light, bulky freight, where you'll fill the floor and even double stack long before weight matters. Knowing which limit binds first, weight or cube, is the single most important thing in planning a load. Figure that out before you count positions.

Double Stacking: When It Doubles and When It Doesn't

Double stacking is how you turn 26 positions into 52, but it only works under specific conditions. The bottom load has to be stable and strong enough to carry a full pallet on top without crushing, the total height has to clear the trailer's interior (usually around 108 to 110 inches of usable height), and the weight has to stay legal.

Sturdy, boxed, uniform freight double stacks well. Fragile, irregular, or top-heavy loads don't, and forcing them means crushed product and a claim. If your bottom cartons can't take the weight of a second pallet, you either need a stronger pallet and pack or you accept single stacking and 26 positions.

The honest planning move is to ask, for this specific product, does double stacking actually gain me anything given my weight limit? If you're weight-limited at 26 single-stacked pallets already, stacking to 52 buys you nothing but risk. Double stack when you're cubing out with light freight, not when you're already heavy.

Plan the Whole Load, Not Just the Count

Getting the maximum count means nothing if the load arrives damaged or the truck gets turned away. Distribute weight so the axles stay legal, heavier pallets low and spread front to back, not all bunched over one axle. An overweight axle is a violation even when the total weight is fine.

Load tight to prevent shifting. Gaps between pallets let loads slide, lean, and topple in transit, which damages product and destabilizes the trailer. Use straight, square pallets that butt cleanly together, and brace or strap where needed. This is one more reason a well-graded pallet earns its price at the loading dock.
