Block vs. Stringer Pallets: Which One Your Operation Needs
Block and stringer pallets look similar from across a warehouse, but they handle forks, weight, and automation differently. Here is how to pick the right one.

The Two Families of Wood Pallet
Almost every wood pallet you will ever load falls into one of two structural families: stringer pallets and block pallets. The difference comes down to what holds the top deck up off the ground. A stringer pallet uses long boards, called stringers, that run the full length of the pallet between the top and bottom decks. A block pallet uses short posts, usually solid wood or engineered blocks, arranged in a grid of nine, with connecting boards tying them together.
That single structural choice ripples through everything else about the pallet: how a forklift can enter it, how much weight it carries, how it behaves in racking, and how much it costs to build. Neither design is universally better. Each was engineered to solve a specific handling problem, and the right pick depends on your equipment, your loads, and how far your product travels.

How a Stringer Pallet Is Built
A classic stringer pallet has three stringers, one on each edge and one down the center, running the length of the pallet. Deck boards are nailed across the top of those stringers, and usually a few bottom boards are nailed underneath to spread the load. The stringers are typically nominal 2x4 lumber, and their solid length is what carries the load across a racking beam or a truck floor.
Forklift entry is where stringers show their character. A basic stringer pallet is a two-way entry pallet: forks and pallet jacks can only come in from the two ends, because the solid stringers block the sides. To get around this, many stringers are notched, meaning a section is cut out of the bottom edge of each stringer to let forks slide in from the sides too. Notching creates partial four-way entry, though the notched sides still cannot accept a pallet jack, only forks.
Stringer pallets are the workhorse of North American shipping. The 48x40 GMA pallet, the most common pallet on the continent, is a stringer design. They are cheaper to build, easy to repair, and forgiving when handled by human operators who can line up their approach.
How a Block Pallet Is Built
A block pallet replaces those long stringers with nine blocks, arranged three across and three deep. Horizontal boards, called stringer boards on the top layers, tie the blocks together and support the deck boards. The result is a pallet with open channels on all four sides at the same height.
Because those channels are identical on every side, a block pallet is a true four-way entry pallet. A forklift or a pallet jack can enter from any of the four sides with no compromise. That matters enormously in high-throughput operations where operators cannot always control their angle of approach, and it is essential in fully automated warehouses where conveyors and robotic handlers expect consistent, unobstructed entry from a known direction.
Block pallets also tend to be stronger and more rigid, which is why they dominate in pooled rental fleets and in racking systems that store unsupported loads. The tradeoff is more material and more labor per pallet, so they cost more up front and weigh more to ship empty.
Head to Head: The Decision Factors
When customers ask us to spec a pallet, we walk through a short list of practical factors rather than arguing about which design is objectively superior. The answer almost always falls out of how the pallet will actually be used.
Run through these before you commit to a large purchase, and the choice usually becomes obvious.
- Entry needs: If pallet jacks or robots must enter from all four sides, block wins. If human forklift operators handle two-way approaches, stringer is fine and cheaper.
- Load weight and racking: Block pallets generally carry more and sag less when stored on unsupported rack beams.
- Automation: Conveyor lines and automated storage systems strongly favor the consistent geometry of block pallets.
- Budget and volume: Stringer pallets cost less per unit and are cheaper to repair, which adds up fast at high volume.
- Repairability: Stringer pallets are quick and cheap to fix; a cracked stringer can be plated or replaced. Block repairs are more involved.
Durability, Damage, and Repair
The way each pallet fails tells you a lot about how to maintain it. The most common failure on a stringer pallet is a cracked or split stringer, usually right where a forklift tine punched into the notch or where the wood dried and checked over time. The good news is that this is one of the easiest pallet repairs there is: the damaged stringer gets a metal repair plate, called a companion stringer or a mending plate, nailed alongside it, or the whole stringer is knocked out and replaced.
Block pallets fail differently. Blocks can shear or crush, and the connecting boards can pull loose, but the nine-block design has redundancy built in, so a single damaged block rarely takes the whole pallet out of service. Repairs are more labor-intensive because you often have to disassemble more of the pallet to reach the failed component.

Which One Should You Order?
For most Cincinnati businesses shipping standard freight domestically on human-operated forklifts, a 48x40 stringer pallet is the sensible default. It is affordable, widely available, easy to replace, and it matches the equipment your trading partners already use. If your loads are moderate and your handling is conventional, do not pay a premium for block construction you will never use.
Reach for block pallets when the operation demands it: automated warehouses, heavy or unstable loads, pooled rental programs, or any workflow where four-way pallet-jack entry genuinely saves time and prevents damage. In those settings the higher up-front cost pays for itself in throughput and reduced product loss.

Is a block pallet always four-way entry?
Yes. The nine-block grid leaves open channels on all four sides at the same height, so forklifts and pallet jacks can enter from any direction. That consistent geometry is the main reason automated systems prefer block pallets.
Can a stringer pallet accept a pallet jack from the sides?
No. Even a notched stringer pallet only allows a forklift into the notched sides, not a pallet jack. The wheels of a jack need a clear, full-height channel, which only the two open ends of a stringer pallet provide.
